Through museum-type exhibition modules, the history of the Order of Calatrava will be narrated
From May 4 to 30, the Lorca Archaeological Museum will become the epicentre of medieval history with an exhibition of Templar weapons and a workshop for children organised by the Cultural Association of the Knights Custodians of the Order of Calatrava.
“Lorca, with its rich history, is the perfect setting for this cultural initiative. From the time of the Iberians to the arrival of the Arabs, this beautiful Lorca enclave has witnessed numerous historical episodes, and this activity aims to enhance that legacy.”
“In this scenario, the association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Region of Murcia,
Lorca City Council, Lorca Municipal Archaeological Museum and Caja Murcia Foundation,
They have decided to bring this exhibition to our city and these workshops will offer visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in medieval times and understand the context in which these weapons were used by the Knights Templar.”
The Templar weapons exhibition will offer visitors a detailed view of the equipment used by the Knights of the Order, including chainmail, gambesons, helmets, lances, swords, axes, bows, crossbows, shields, banners, tunics, footwear and kitchen utensils, among others. Through museum-style exhibition modules, the history of the Order of Calatrava and the life and work of Saint Raimundo de Fitero and his warrior monks will be narrated, and aspects of daily life will be explained - clothing, customs, historical and social anecdotes of the period..., the main battles they had to undertake and the weapons used.
On the other hand, there will be several 'Workshops on Monks-Knights of Calatrava la Vieja. Military Clothing and Weaponry', which is designed for children between 8 and 14 years old, and will provide these young people with the opportunity to learn about medieval history in a fun and educational way. It will be led by experts in history and medieval recreation, and will address topics such as the life of the Calatrava monks, the weapons used and the main battles fought.
This educational activity aims to foster curiosity and creativity in young people, as well as to convey to them the rich historical legacy of Spain. In addition, both the exhibition and the workshop are a unique opportunity to learn about the Order of Calatrava and the role it has played in Spanish medieval history.
The Councillor for Culture has praised this initiative and has encouraged all Lorca residents and visitors to take part in these activities. “We thank the Cultural Association of the Knights Custodians of the Order of Calatrava for their work in disseminating and preserving the history of Spain and for choosing Lorca as the venue for this exhibition in which we will be able to learn about and appreciate the rich historical heritage of Lorca and the Region of Murcia and, of course, of Spain.”
